If you're still feeling a little sluggish after all the turkey and gravy, make sure to read on - this edition of Studio Happenings has some announcements that may help you to kick things back into high gear as we enter the home stretch of 2016!
From time to time, we like to hand the blog over to one of our amazing instructresses to let them share their stories. Andrea Blasdale joined our team last year after first joining #poisenation as a client. Whether you've caught one of her classes, or sparkled next to her on the mat, Andrea's energy and passion for fitness is irresistible! Andrea, take it away!
How does one “find” fitness? Well, I strongly believe that each of us discovers a healthy lifestyle in our own way – some through tragedy, some through a health scare, and some through pure curiosity (among other life events, of course). I’ve never spoken much about how I found fitness and developed such a strong love for it, but I’ve come to realize that it’s so important to share stories. We share stories to find others who may have a similar story, and therefore come together to transform ourselves into better people. Here is mine, in a nutshell…
I always loved to be active. As a child, my mother let me experiment with anything that sparked my interest, and therefore I played softball and basketball, I danced ballet, I became a cheerleader, and I did anything that involved running around and releasing all my energy. I loved to be busy and consumed by physical activity. As time went on and the relationship I was in grew more and more serious, I allowed that to become my number one priority. I worked full-time, I went to school full-time, and I was taking care of everyone else before taking care of myself. Before I knew it, I was planning a wedding while finishing college and applying to graduate school. I wanted to have the life I had always dreamed of: a home of my own, an education, a well-paying job…and a husband. I was 22 years old and well on my way to the majority of that list.
I felt so accomplished, knowing that I had already crossed so many items off my “to do” list. Unfortunately, I had also crossed myself off that list. I lost sight of who needed love, respect, and attention – me. In the midst of it all, I started feeling less than worthy to someone who I believed loved me no matter what – including what I looked like. That belief shrunk as the days went by, and no matter how hard I tried, it fell apart. I was left with the shell of the life I had been so busy planning for, and then I had nothing. It took a long time to bounce back from a failed relationship – one that made me think I didn’t deserve to be happy or feel beautiful in my own skin.
I finally got out of my funk and took my first class at Studio Poise. I loved every second. It made me sweat, it made me sore, and it was a challenge. I knew I would be back for more, and that’s exactly what I did. I made going to class a priority at least 5 to 6 times a week and I was eating better, and before I knew it, the pounds were dripping off and I could see muscles in places I didn’t even know existed! I was so inspired by the energy and welcoming nature of Studio Poise and its instructresses. Eventually, I took the plunge to become an instructress myself, and I found myself attending certification classes and training more than I ever had in my entire life. I even developed a love for running and yoga – who would have thought? I look back at the rough patch in my life that made me feel lower than the lowest low and smile, because without that to bounce back from, I don’t think I’d be where I am today. I am thankful for the hard times, and for the opportunity to give #poisenation the same energy and welcoming nature that I felt on the first day I walked through that door.

This weekend, give back while you're burning calories at Studio Poise! The amazing Alison Oxton will be hosting a benefit Piloxing class to help raise money for Yoga Reaches Out. Team Studio Poise will be participating in the YRO Yogathon on April 26 to help raise money for Children's Hospital Boston. We asked Alison to tell us a little bit about why she's participating in this great event!
As 2014 comes to a close, join us as we take some time to reflect on the past year. #Poisenation has grown so much this year, and we have a lot to celebrate! We asked our instructresses to share the moments and memories from 2014 that mean the most to them - here's what they had to say:
This year was a year of many firsts for me, especially when it comes to Studio Poise and fitness in general! I'm so grateful for the opportunity to go from client to instructress at SP. Piloxing training was amazing as well, as it was my first fitness certification outside of the studio. I've made so many new friends, and I've truly fallen in love with fitness and being healthy in 2014. It makes me proud that I went from despising the gym to loving every workout, all in a matter of a year or two. This community of women who love being fit and healthy makes this lifestyle so much easier to adapt to, so cheers to #poisenation - I'm celebrating YOU this holiday season! xo
2014 was definitely an eventful year for me! I got to travel a lot, my nephew Joey was born and has been such a blessing to us all, I started a new job teaching 8th grade and have been reminded of why I became a teacher in the first place, and last but not least, I became an instructress at Studio Poise and get to hang out with some of the best ladies I know every day. I am so lucky to live the life I do, surrounded by amazing family and friends, but I am most grateful for my husband, because he is the one that takes care of everything (especially our two min pins Rico and Roxy) so that I can pursue my passions. I can't wait to see what adventures 2015 will bring!
2014 was a great year for me, I have a lot to be thankful for. I have been working full time in the fitness industry for about two years as the Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness for UMass Lowell and I am loving it. At this point in my life I am very work/career focused. I was lucky this year to attend multiple conferences, workshops, and master classes due to job. I love bettering myself as an fitness instructor and like to keep up with the latest trends and improvements in the industry. I get to take the tools and tips in these workshops and help out new instructors at UMass Lowell. A large part of my job (and favorite) at UMass Lowell is hiring and training new group fitness instructors. I love working with new instructors and watching their skills develop over time. Working with new instructors keeps me on my toes and makes my job exciting.
I co-taught a Sunset Zumba class at UMass Lowell to 100 members of the university and I thought was my proudest moment of 2014. After putting more thought into it I decided it was December 7th 2014. On December 7th there was a Piloxing training in Boston. I did not attend this training but 5 of my regular Pilox-ers did. I was so excited that people enjoyed Piloxing enough to go out and learn more about one of my favorite classes. The people that went are familiar faces to SPNation Chrissy, Andrea, Karina, and Nicole from SP and I had one student from UMass Lowell attend. They probably don’t know how excited I was they went, but it was great for me to see more women get involved with fitness.
As the year comes to a close I know I am doing exactly what I should be doing. I have a huge passion for helping people achieve their health and wellness goals, and I am lucky I get to do this every day. I am so appreciative for all the ladies that come to SP, I love seeing you in classes and I am truly inspired by the motivation you all have, especially in the early morning classes ;). I am looking forward to all the new adventures in 2015, see you soon!
I had so many wonderful experiences in 2014, however, one stands out above the rest. I was granted the opportunity to take a two week Mediterranean cruise to Italy, Turkey and Greece! It was an all-around incredible experience and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to travel and explore! Also, this year I made many changes in my career and personal life. Although all the loose ends are not completely tied up yet, I'm so proud of the woman I've grown into and I am more eager than ever to continue down the path I'm on in 2015.
This holiday season I am celebrating life and love with my family and friends. It's so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and forget how important it is to cherish the little things in life and appreciate those around us. My resolution for the new year is to pause (from the everyday hustle and bustle), think (before I speak and act), and appreciate (all I've been given).
Mostly I'm grateful to be doing something I love and sharing this with friends and family. I got a text from a friend this weekend who just started taking my Barreworke classes and Danielle's Piloxing, thanking me for introducing her to Studio Poise. She loves how nice the people are and how great the classes have made her feel, that SP is now her happy place (her words). So this 2014, I was able to share what I love to do with a friend and help her find happiness from it as well. I'm thankful to Danielle for allowing me to #spreadthesparkle at Studio Poise.
2014 started off as my partying year. Come Easter, with a positive pregnancy test I had quickly shifted gears. I put all of my focus into my health and fitness throughout my pregnancy. I trained with some intense cardio, weights and of course my poised and Preggo classes. I wasn't sure what to anticipate with labor and delivery so I treated it as I was training for a marathon. On Dec 14 at 4:14 pm after a long and strenuous 44 hours of labor my son Brock Daniel came into this world. The labor itself was exhausting but thankfully my abs remained intact throughout my entire pregnancy and I only "pushed" for less than 30 minutes because of how strong I kept my "core". I have Studio Poise to thank for that! Look out 2015- this will be the year of the HOTT FIT MAMA!
I'm proud of my ability to have such patience with the students I work with. Every day I'm faced with students who don't want to learn or don't want to do their work and I'm proud of my abilities to be able to help them to be enthusiastic about learning new math skills,writing skills and reading skills. I enjoy what I do every day and am so proud that I'm able to do what I love.
2014 was a year of conquering fears and accomplishing goals for me. In the past 6 months, I have become a Studio Poise Instructress, completed my first half marathon, rode on a banana boat in the ocean (I am terrified of sharks!), and landed a dream full-time job. I am SO entirely grateful for all the inspiring people in my life who support every crazy new adventure I have set out on. Without my family, friends, and the Studio Poise community cheering me on- I am not sure I would have been able to reach my goals but am so thankful and proud that I have. Looking forward to an even better 2015!
A goal of mine for about two years now has been to be a barre instructor and I can finally say I have accomplished a goal I didn't think was possible! If you told me five years ago that I would be teaching multiple fitness classes right now I would not believe you. I am so happy and grateful to be part of such an amazing community. I am so thankful that I decided to come out of my comfort zone and try something new! Happy holidays Poise Nation! Love you all xoxo
Obviously, my greatest accomplishment this year, and the thing I am most grateful for, is Cullen. Bringing him into this world and watching him morph into a little person is the most amazing and fulfilling thing my heart has ever experienced. Not sure how appropriate this is, but I'm also pretty proud to say I've been lucky enough to provide him with only momma's milk for his entire existence thus far and will be able to until he's at least 1! It's hard work and a pretty big accomplishment. Lastly, I'm proud to have become a POUND Pro. I love teaching it to SPnation and I'm grateful for all of my students who come to that and S&T every week!
It is hard to pin point one thing that I'm proud of over the last year as 2014 has been quite the year in my book. In June I got married and I couldn't be happier! July we found out we were expecting a little addition to our new family and I can't wait to share him with #Poisenation. October I celebrated one year of teaching at Studio Poised and became certified in teaching Perinatal classes. Looking back I would have never thought that 2014 could have brought this much joy and happiness in my life but I wouldn't change a moment of it! Thanks #poisenation for being a part of it! It has been a truly amazing year and I cant wait to jump into 2015 to see what it brings me!
At the beginning of 2014 I made a "resolution" to do more yoga. I had done it years ago but it was always for the fitness aspect, I never really stuck with it long enough to reap the benefits it can bring to the mind. After a long year filled with lots of down dogs, headstands & ohms, I am so so happy and proud to announce I will be starting the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training at Barre & Soul in January. This is an extensive 6 month program and (from what I've heard) a life-changing experience. I am so excited to complete this training and bring my yoga classes to all of you!! Much thanks to all of the clients and #poisenation for such a great year, I truly enjoy sparkling & sweating with all of you, daily! <3 Emily
