The Studio Poise family is excited to share Carly's story with you today in our Transformation Thursday post! Carly joined Studio Poise in the Winter of 2015 and soon became a frequent flyer and part of the SP family. We think many of you will be able to relate to Carly's honest and refreshing depiction of life after college!
Growing up I never really had to worry about staying active. I was always on the move as a kid – playing soccer, dancing, and in my teenage years participating in competitive cheerleading. Since I was so active I never had to worry about what I was eating, and being on such a busy schedule meant a lot of fast food and on-the-go snacks. As one would assume, this made for some pretty bad habits that would catch up to me later on.
Fast-forward to my freshman year of college and it finally did. I had aged out of cheerleading and my level of physical activity came to a screeching halt. I would go to the campus gym here and there but was spending a lot more time relaxing with friends, eating, drinking, partying - you know the deal ;) 5 years of undergrad later (yes, it took me 5 years) and one semester eating my way – whoops - I mean “traveling” my way through Europe and I was up 30 pounds. Although I wouldn’t trade my college memories for the world, I had put on a lot of noticeable weight and I was feeling really uncomfortable about the change.
I reached out to Erica Ferrell for some fitness advice. Many of you know Erica as the bundle of energy teaching early morning Barreworke/ Nothin' But Leg or as the crazy lady with the biggest smile in the world on her face during a 60 second round of burpees during SPiit. While I too know her as all these things, I’m also lucky enough to know her as my cousin and a role model inside and outside of the studio. Erica introduced me to Studio Poise in the winter of 2015 and I fell in love. I finally found a place where working out didn’t feel like a chore. Classes were not just challenging, but actually fun – who would have thought! The immediate level of support I felt among fellow SPers and instructresses was amazing and I’m happy to say that these strangers have turned from work out buddies to friends. Whether its Barreworke with Erica, Tuesday morning SPiit with Lindsay (9 months pregnant or not - she is fierce!), Saturday morning sweat sessions with Chrissy in Poised & Hot Bodies, or literally being destroyed (in the best way possible) during Friday morning Body by Bradley with Danielle – I absolutely can not get enough of this place! While finding a workout routine I also learned to eat to fuel my body while still allowing myself to celebrate and have fun with friends - an importance balance to maintain!
It funny because at the beginning of this journey it was all about how I looked. I gained a bunch of weight during college and I wanted to lose it, so that’s why I worked out. I’ve finally figured it out, though: Transformations aren’t strictly physical. I genuinely have been so much happier and more confident since starting classes at SP. Its become a place where I can leave my stress at the door, a second home almost. Healthy lifestyles don’t need to be defined by how many calories you consume or how many miles you can run. Its not about how much weight you can lift or being able to survive the whole set of ‘arms of death’. It’s about a happy and healthy mind, a consistent positive attitude, and the ability to love the mind, body and soul that you’ve been blessed with. Inches lost are just a small perk of what SP has done for me. Thank you to everyone who has been there along the way. It’s just the beginning!
