I remember hearing when I was pregnant from other mothers, scratch that, even before I was pregnant, that you don't understand how your life will change until you actually become a mother. I nodded my head in agreement, but to myself I thought, "They are wrong! I get it! I'll have it all figured out. I can easily take on motherhood, work, my marriage, and everything else in between." When someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never knew the answer. What I did know is that wanted to be a mother. That motherhood part....I've had that figured out since I was a kid!
Fast forward to March 11, 2010 when my little girl arrived. Mom's to be out there, it is true what we say...until that baby arrives you do not truly understand how your life changes. It is literally like wearing your heart on your sleeve EVERY SINGLE DAY. Everything that you used to put first is now second (if even second) to the needs and love you have for your child. It is an amazingly wonderful, sometimes overwhelming, ever fulfilling job to be a mother. It's been 4 1/2 years since Ella was born. I also have a son Nathan (2) who, along with my loving and ever supportive husband (who is also an amazing dad), make up my little family.
I've been a full-time working mom, part-time working mom, and a full-time stay at home mom throughout these past 4 1/2 years. I'm writing today because it is easy to make sure our children are happy and their needs fulfilled, but sometimes in the process we forget about ourselves. We research the best pre-schools, we look for story times, we sign up for mommy & me classes, we enroll our kids in dance, sports, and gymnastics. While this is all very important, I want to remind all us moms to remember to care for ourselves. If we are happy and caring for ourselves, then our children will soak up that happiness and in turn be happy!
I challenge the mom's today to find what makes you happy! I have found happiness at the barre. I love how I feel when I'm taking a class or teaching a class. I feel empowered to push through a tough workout, sweat, and at the end of class, truly sparkle because I've been surrounded by other women doing the same and taking care of themselves in the process. Find a class that gives you this same feeling! Maybe it's Poise, Barreworke, Zumba, Piloxing or Pound. Sign up, take a class and see how you feel. If you have your kids with you during the day, come and drop them off for FREE child care! Let them play with the other kids and enjoy 55 minutes of "you" time! Or, take an hour after the kids are fed and sleeping and workout at one of the evening classes. I know what you're saying. I've heard the excuses. "It's dark. I'm exhausted from the day. I can't workout now." Just TRY IT! It's what I did. The kids were sleeping, and instead of just sitting on the couch I went and took a class. It made me happy and I felt fulfilled. It was the best decision I made because it brought me to my happy place filled with lots of sparkly and really nice people: Studio Poise!
